The Wait
“My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved.” Psalm 62:5-6

My earliest recollection of waiting was for my dad to pick us up after school as a child. The waiting would be so long that my siblings and I would usually be among the last children to leave. We did not think much about it as children for we knew it meant a longer time playing at school with friends and since we knew our dad worked hard all day long and sacrificed a lot for us, we waited with an understanding. We have all waited for something at some point in our lives, so ask yourself, what does waiting look like for you? What feelings rise up within you as you wait? As children we did not really have an option and had to wait but one thing we learnt was that we made the most out of the time we spent waiting. We figured we would have a good time while we waited which was the best option looking back now.

Another thing that made the wait worthwhile was the hope that we had that our dad would get us snacks that we would eat on our way home. The anticipation that there was a reward for the wait made the time spent waiting go by faster than we imagined. This was not so much that the time spent waiting was short but that we shifted our focus from the time to the reward that was coming. The verse above is an encouragement that the Psalmist is telling himself to wait silently for God alone. Our God is a good Father that loves us and has our best interests at heart and when He tells us to wait on Him its not that He does not want us to have what we are praying for but that He wants to give us something better at the perfect time.
Our willingness to wait reveals the value we place on what we are waiting for.Charles Stanley
There are times when we are so down and no one around us seems to understand what we are going through that all we can do is speak to our souls and encourage ourselves. David says in this Psalm that his expectation is from God and that means that he was waiting with hope and an expectation of what was to come. May I encourage you today that even though you might feel down and hopeless and it may seem like everyone around you has forgotten you, do not lose hope. Keep your expectations up and continue to encourage yourself. Do not let yourself be moved by the different things that come your way but wait silently and soon enough you will receive your reward and the wait will be so much worth it. Be blessed.
